Polyurethane instead of steel: UST Inc. specialists test promising materials
UST Inc. specialists have begun testing wheels with polyurethane tires. This material is resistant to wear and tear and mechanical damage, and provides wheels with better traction and shock absorption.
The tests are conducted on a special test bench, where the uPod wheel is rolled on a larger diameter wheel that simulates a rail. The purpose of the tests is to check the service life of wheels with polyurethane rim.
The tests demonstrate the stability of the polyurethane rim material under design loads and speeds, ensuring a mileage of more than 100,000 kilometers for the rail electric vehicle.
The use of special grades of high-strength polyurethane will improve the performance of rail unmanned vehicles in the future. Wheels made from this material can withstand significant loads without residual deformation. Polyurethane wheel components are lighter, cheaper, and quieter than steel ones.
